Cruise control problem help please?

I have a 2004 face-lift cdti with cruise control, when im travelling at speed i press the mains switch on the center console and the light on the button lights up green ok, however when i press the set button on the steering wheel nothing happens, the yellow cruise light does not light up on instrument panel and there is no cruise functionality at all, any idea what the problem could be? any help much appreciated, regards.
