Head/block dowel help!!

Hello chaps, need help. I'm in the middle of a HG change, everything has been a piece of cake so far... but now I'm stuck.



The new kit came with new metal dowels, so I thought "hey, might as well use the new ones", it'll also be easier to clean the block face with them out the way.



But I cant for the life of me get the buggers out, I've basically stripped the entire engine down to the block on my own, I cant believe I'm having this much grief with some bloody little dowels. Any ideas??
