New puzzle for me. MG ZT 1.8t Non-starter.

Little experience with these R75/MGZT Cars but, plenty with K-Series engines.

Engine spins on starter but does not fire. Car been stood unused for about a month with suspect damaged cylinder head gasket. Some oil-coolant mix emulsification seen on underside of Oil Filler cap ~ not much though.

So here's the non-start scenario. 3/4 tank of RON95. Strong sparks on all four plugs outside engine and proved sparking inside later. Disconnected quick release fuel supply line and placed inside bottle. Switching on ignition fuel pump priming for about three=four seconds clearly heard. Small amount of fuel collected in bottles. Expected more.

Removed all four Spark Plugs and carefully placed a teaspoon of fuel into each cylinder through the spark plug hole and replaced Plugs and Coil Packs. Turned key and immediate start for about three seconds with engine spinning smoothly. Sounded well briefly then dies as if no fuel. So sparks OK within engine.

This was last night in fast approaching darkness and increasing rain so called it a day .. or night .. :) I was then called out to tow one of my sons' friends non-runner Metro from his council garage to his mother's home nearby. Again still raining ..

Now I do remember reading about fuel pump supply problems with these larger MGs and Rovers so maybe .. ?? However, the Fuel Pump is priming, can clearly hear this when switching on. Think I will again check fuel supply by disconnecting as before and running the starter for a few seconds. That should nearly fill say a 600ml container in that short period. It does when doing the same fuel supply test on a Rover 620ti.

Inertia switch ~ need to check that. Would engine run as it did above if that switch has been activated cutting off fuel ? Where is it. IIRC, behind a panel in the drivers side ??

So, engine runs briefly when manually fuelling it but, no signs of starting in the normal way. So fuel not reaching injectors thus PRIME SUSPECT could be that pump as I seem to remember reading that has been the non-start problem with some of these cars.

Any hints or comments what also to check will be appreciated. I will search this forum later and refresh my memory.

TIA.
