1st Breakdown - Lingering Smell

Had my first breakdown after 1.7 years of ownership.

Saturday I was replacing the fuel filter and as always was very, very gentle with the connections - working with petrol scares me, especially in an enclosed engine bay such as it is on a F/TF.

Anyhoo checked for leaks around 5-6 times over the case of an hour, giving everything a chance to evaporate, firing ignition and checking for leaks. None were found, paranoia left and away I went. No problems at all.

Monday comes, coming up to a roundabout, sudden drop in power and a very, very strong smell of petrol. Engine off right away, rolled over the roundabout and up a road. Grill off, inspection cover off and the culprit was the red connector had become totally disconnected from the fuel line, the result being fuel literately spraying the engine bay.

Plugged it back in, waited an hour and checked 4-5 times. No leak.

Still getting a very strong smell of petrol, although I cant see any leak at all. No dripping under the car either.

Could it just be the residue on the engine heating up and smelling a bit as I drive?
