ball joint issue

ive tried to fit a new bottom ball joint to the nearside off my 2004 zs and it seems to drop too far through the bottom arm so when the nut tightens it still leaves some movement and eventually when out of threads just spins Im sure its the correct part but it does not seem to lock into the bottom arm on the tapered edge correctly can anyone advise if the bottom arm locator holes wear or if you have come across this problem before. forgive my lack of technical terminology as im just a guesser mechanic but I do quite like the car and need to get it through its MOT so any help would be great thanks
