Rear lamp holder covers F or Tf fitting.

Has anyone any tips on how best to fit these? Have a pair ready but weighing up the alternatives it looks as if they can be fitted leaving existing nuts in in place and using 3 new nuts, or taking existing nuts off and using them to hold the light holders and covers on, or some old threads talk about shortening the cover legs by a few mm to give enough thread for new nuts! Not life and death, but using new nuts so that cover is fixed separately looks best option. Discuss!
