Removing Box Section under seats

I recently read a post from someone saying that they had lowered their seats by removing the box section under their seat and replacing it with a high tensile steel plate. They seemed to think this had actually improved the rigidity of the car.



Has anyone tried this because although a pretty scary job it seems to me it would simply be a case of having a go with an angle grinder and welder?
