Rover K Series Bolt Tolerance

Hi all.

I'm pretty convinced my HG has gone, losing water daily now and overheated the other day, steam coming out the filler cap etc etc.

So, I'm going to go for the original design elastomer gasket not the MLS which I currently have as I'm not convinced they are all they are cracked up to be especially on an uneven head and liners such as on my engine, I have no room for another skim (already had 3) so I beleive the elastomer is the way to go as MLS needs perfect flat surfaces.

I don't intend to keep the car much more than another year so don't want to spend too much but I realise skimping isn't the way to go either. (its getting old now and body work underneath needs work) its served me amazingly over the years has my 96 414 at 150k miles)

For this reason I'm thinking of reusing the long bolts so long as they have enough stretch left in them, does anyone know the tolerances of these bolts so I can ascertain if I need to buy new ones?

Secondly, regarding MLS gaskets, how exactly can these fail. Stupid question I know but last time I checked they are made up of 3 steel layers so surely they can't perish or split like the silicone bead on the original gaskets?

Thanks all, Matt
