Can I spray my car at home?
Before I start.. I'm not a pro sprayer.. Or a mechanic..
I asked that question in the car paint suppliers.. And the guys serving just inhaled through their teeth..
So could you paint your own car at home?
For those interested.. Here's what I've learnt
Yes you can take your car to a body shop and pay between £800 and £8,000 for a paint job.. I took my hard top to Ding Master in swindon and spent £400 having it painted.. Badly.. Twice before being told 'it's only an MG mate'
So.. Prep..
Every panel being painted needs to be 110% perfect of defects.. Cause once the paint goes on it will magnify every defect..
I'm using this high build primer which dries hard in 20mins..
Before the primer goes on.. I've 'flatted' the panels off using 120 grit and then 320 grit on one of these
The large long flat surface means panels end up properly flat..
But as it's all done by hand it takes forever.. A lot of hours!
Then add primer.. Then flat back again using 320..
I'd normally spray over with a cheapo rattle can next.. Black.. So that I can then flat again and check for high/low spots..
Its easy to miss imperfections when in just primer.. And then bingo.. As soon as the paint goes on.. The ding/dent/Mark shows a mile off..
This is the passenger door which has been primed.. Then flatted using 320 on the block plane.
Now that I've spent 20 mins flatting it off again I've found a high spot
Visible where all of the primer has been removed..
Whole door 320'd.. Now will prime again.. And repeat.. A pro body shop would doubtless get it right first time.. Mind I've seen some shocking paint work done by 'pros'
Ok.. So I'm adding primer.. And removing it with the 320.. But the end goal is flat smooth panels..
