Did something dumb
Hi Gents,
Did something dumb.
I used an AC top up can about a year ago incorrectly ...
Stupidly topped up on the LP feed without the engine running, then started the engine immediately.
The product I used included was a castrol can with some kind of compound to reduce leaks. When I checked the instructions it said to add the product while the engine was running. Daaaaaa.
About 20 mins later my compressor clutch burned out. Horrible smell. At the time I thought it was just old because the AC had not been used for about a year due to low coolant pressure disabling the system.
I got the system bled to remove the coolant then I replaced the AC compressor. The new compressor clutch burned out instantly when I was at the garage repressurising the system. Same horrible smell .
Now I have replaced again the compressor but wondering if my mis-use of the top-up can I have blocked the valve expansion evaporator?
If the gunk in the can blocked it up because it thought the evaporator was a leak, is it possible this could burn out the two clutches on the compressors?
Certainly on the compressor I removed today the inner flywheel turned OK and perfectly smoothly, so it has got me thinking that the system is blocked somewhere and the gas is not evaporating resulting mechanical failure because the compressor can't turn.
Any ideas gents?
Prefer to change the evaporator now rather than having to change another pump. Don't want to burn out another ac clutch ..
Thanks
Richard
