Help! Rover 25 1.4 03 reg, end of tether now :-(
Hi all, new to the forum :-) My car is a 1.4 Rover 25, 16 valve on an 03 plate :-)
Can someone please help me with this 25? In a nutshell (albeit a rather large nutshell) the temperature gauge will not behave. The story is as follows:
My car started to overheat (possibly) Under load, anything over 40 miles per hour, the temp gauge would go up to maybe 3/4 or 4/5 heat then come back down on its own or sometimes by me opening the heater up full. The heater didn't always blow hot, sometimes it was coldish. When arriving at destination the coolant would be bubbling in the expansion tank and the fan would be on, this would last a couple of minutes. Also, the water could be heard bubbling from somewhere around the water pump area. I had the thermostat changed and for a couple of weeks everything was fine but it's started again. Sounds like a mass of air in the system. I burped the car several times and it definitely expelled air but didn't solve the problem so I have bought a new cap for the expansion tank, drained the whole system, refilled, bled, burped etc etc and yet the temp gauge is still showing the car running hot! The coolant (this is just water at the moment) is no longer boiling in the expansion tank but you can still hear it bubbling away in the area where the water pump, thermostat etc are. The car has no oil in the water, no water in the oil and only loses coolant when it vents through the cap if it boils in the expansion tank, otherwise the level is pretty steady. One more thing is that once the car has cooled down, if you remove the cap there is quite a hiss as air escapes and sometimes coolant 'jumps' in the bottle as if there is still trapped air which is escaping at velocity. I've only had the car a couple of months and the previous owner had the head gasket job done, new water pump, gaskets etc etc etc. Any idea what's going on? Anyone? PLEASE!
