re trim door panels

The front passenger door trim panel in my Rover 75 was flapping around as is just about every 75 Ive seen over here.

Thought I would see if the panel could be removed and re upholstered using the original brushed nylon.

The answer is,yes it can definately can be done and I came across a bunch of interesting information doing it.

Firstly, the reason why the nylon trim falls off the door panel is that the foam that was used (or the backing ) has broken down, combined with the glue that MGR used, over time, causing the foam to become a very sticky substance which just crumbles.

Theres not much use trying to re glue the cloth back as there is nothing hard to fix it to.

As the door panel is made of ABS plastic, the panel is made up in 3 parts, the top (black vinyl part) the middle (the upholstered bit) and the bottom (storage bit)

The three parts are held together by hot melting a number of points around each panel.

Apart from removing the arm rest (a metal back plate and about 6 bolts) basically you will need to seperate the 3 parts of the door.

You need to carefully drill the top of the melted pins off.

I found a heap of the melt points were either broken or cracked anyway but drilled the tops off so I could drill small holes in the top of the pins for screws.

Once you get to the upholstered panel you need to carefully prize the nylon material off around the edges (some points appear to have some sort of stitching into the ABS) but eventually it all comes off.

The rear of the nylon will be covered with the sticky orange substance (was foam) and the remainder is on the door panel.

This stuff just sticks to everything.

Lay the material face down and scrape all of the sticky stuff off the back of the material and do the same with the door panel.

Once scrapped off,put the nylon material into a tub of warm water with detergent, scrub it with a nylon brush until clean, hand out to dry.

Get some 1/8 thin foam sheeting, spray the door panel and one side of the foam with a good adhesive ,stick the foam to the panel, make sure it is pushed into all the contours on the door.Cut out the door handle hole and any other holes.

Trim the foam around the edge of the panel right back to the top of the edge of the panel so the nylon material just sticks to the edge of the ABS panel.

Spray the rear of the nylon material and the foam with the glue and line the nylon material door handle hole up the fix the material along the top edge and work the material downward to the bottom, smoothing out any wrinkles that might bunch up,pressing the material into all curves etc.

Putting the panel back is basically in reverse but using small screws where the melt points were BUT be careful along the bottom edge as there is not much depth in the ABS at that point in the panel.

Other word of warning is the speaker cover, not much drilling material.

The panel came out like new but alot of work !!!
