Why does the K-series have such good fuel economy?

... I have a friend who has developed his own ECU from scratch (board layouts, software, the works).

I have a 97 VVC mgf that's essentially stock (Just K&N + 52mm TB).

He has a highly modified AW11 supercharger and is building up a new 7AGZE based unit with very similar geometry to our beloved K...

We both want to know why the 1.8L K-series can get such good fuel economy (40+ mpg extra-urban).

Does anyone know what AFR figures it runs at say 100kph cruise on the motorway? Other ideas about the economy?

BTW. we plan to hook up a wideband lambda and piggy-back onto the MEMS 2J for the purpose of figuring out what's going on. We should be able to reverse engineer a goodly part of the stock map -- given enough time and driving opportunities ;-)
