Cant get plastic oval door handle backing to fit

I have just fitted new door pads and bought new plastic ovals that sit behind the handle as the old ones had been cut to shreds to fit. And now I see why. I cant for the life of me get the oval to line up properly to screw i. I can push it into place but then the screw hole is nowhereto be seen . Any ideas?
