Clutch Cable Noise

Could anyone tell me what is inside the rubber gator on the cable pictured below. Every time I press down and then release the clutch pedal there is a clicking noise coming from this cable. It is defiantly coming from the cable and not the lever. The noise is so loud it can be heard in the car with the stereo on and window open.
