MG ZR160 - oil type for hot climates
Yes, it's the old 'what oil' argument again, but searching and the manual doesn't really answer this particular question.
The manual shows the much favoured 10w-40 oil for temperature ranges of -20 to 30C.
Well, I live in Adelaide where a freezing morning is 10C and we complain bitterly if it gets down to 0. Also, 30C isn't even warm, let alone hot.
The workshop manual suggests 15w-40 for a temperature range of 0-40C, which is more what I like live in.
However, the owner's manual that came with the vehicle sticks with the 10w-40 recommendation though I suspect the only 'rewrites' for Australia came in the form of a couple of pages tacked in at the back. Similarly, the workshop manual (I'm talking the compilation of MG-Rover tech articles, not the Haynes effort), lists a table giving the above recommendation and then goes on to ignore it.
Surely someone here has experience with hotter climates and can help out.
People on here seem pretty set on the idea that the factory never recommended fully synthetic oil and only recommended semi-synthetic. I can not find these recommendations anywhere except from forumites. I'm not arguing the point, just wondering where this 'recommendation' originates.
Finally, just to complete the confusion, the local oil companies don't give a recommendation for the ZR160 (it was on sale here but only for a few months before MG-Rover went belly-up) but for the MGF VVC, all recommend a 10w-40 fully synthetic. They do offer semi-synthetic oils but maybe they weren't as popular 10 years ago when these engines were being produced.
So what the %$#@& do I put in the thing, bearing in mind that I don't suffer freezing conditions and in summer I get to commute in 40C temperatures (yes, we get stop start traffic too)?
Although I didn't find any for the recent oil change, I have now found where I can get 10w-40 semi-synthetic in my preferred brand and maybe it doesn't matter very much.
