Short urban trips

Now I'm living very close to Uni & town I'm only doing 6 mile trips. I'm still getting 26.6mpg with my diesel auto with climate on. I wondered what the petrol auto petrol models would give with these sort of journeys? I've heard that diesel take more fuel to accelerate & are better at cursing,than being stuck in start stop traffic.
