Why oh why do our subframes have holes in...

As above really, why?



I dont really understand why, surely as they are open and a fair bit wide they let water in to the inside.



Whats the reason?



I put tape on mine to cover them up. Good or bad idea?



They must be there by design as both my front and rear has them in the same position and they are the same size...
