enging inspection cover bolts

Hi all. Hoping someone could give me some advice about what to do with the nuts (that are part of body work) which over the years have been stripped of their threads with removal of inspection cover. I had to grind the head of a nut tonight just to get the cover off as the nut just kept going around.



I was thinking about rethreading the nuts with taps but have never done this before. The nuts must be awful soft?:confused:
