Protect your spark-plug leads - Simple modification with pictures

I spent nigh on a year groaning about my high-tension spark-plug leads. Eventually I coughed up some money for some very unsexy -- but new -- spark plug leads. It made a world of difference.

Anyway I thought I'd share a little trick that should extend the life of your spark-plug leads. I hope the pictures are reasonably self explanatory, but what it boils down to is -- make sure your leads do not rub against sharp or pointy shaped bits of grounded metal.

Electric fields are intensified at sharp points. In the case of the MGF's spark-plug leads it means that they'll tend to go where they touch against the points on the bolt-heads of the cam-cover.

Rounding off the bolt head would be dumb for obvious reasons, but it's easy to press fit a spacer over the top. In my case I used rubber tap washers that I bored out with a 10mm twist bit:

Shinier area on cam cover bolt due to partial discharge from #2 sparkplug lead

Regular tap washer about to be drilled out to fit over cam-cover bolt-head.

Spacers fitted to #3 and #4. I don't think it's needed for #1 and #2, since the spark-plug leads don't touch the bolt-heads.

Cheeky shot of a new set of Lucas leads and the spacers. The header is off a blacktop 4AGE. 87.5mm port spacing.. Hmm I wonder if it could be coerced to fit ;-)
