Suspect fuel problem

As above folks, have a Rover 45 diesel with suspect fuel problems. It runs fine for a while then seems to develop a misfire(even though diesels can't) that's most noticeable on idle. Have inspected all fuel lines and they seem ok. Disconnected the feed pipe from tank though and want to know if fuel should flow from this when disconnected? Thanks for viewing all.
