Useful tip for fitting CV joints

I've been replacing the outer CV joints on my ZS.The wire circlip that retains the outer joint can get damaged (I damaged one of mine) if the ends are not held in while the joint is tapped onto the driveshaft.

Mr. Haynes says to use two small screwdrivers to hold the ends of the circlip together. Then have your assistant tap on the joint. Everything is liberally coated in oil to aid assembly and I couldn't do it, even though I did have an assistant available.

So what I did was to find a large cable tie and wrap it tightly around the circlip. The tie needs to have fine serrations - I had some large ties but with coarse serrations and these didn't work because they wouldn't go tight enough.

Cut the flying end off the tie, offer up your CV joint and give it a sharp blow with a soft-faced hammer and the joint goes on easily, pushing the cable tie off the circlip and further up the splines. All that remains is to cut off the redundant cable tie with some side cutters.

I've done two joints this way today and it works fine. It might help others who either have no assistant or no patience!
