Doing Oil change...

I had a great idea, drive my hourly commute to work, crack the sump plug and let the oil drain out (first oil change done on my own), then at lunchtime remove the filter, clean up, pop the sump plug back in and then pop on the new oil filter and top up, along with spark plugs and air filter...

Great plan!

Got to work this morning, got all my tools out and laid down, spotted what I believe to be the sump plug, can I get it off? I can't get a massive amount of leverage on it, but its impossible to turn it! :( Can't get it off! Spent about 20 minutes faffing with spanners and sockets/ratchet. Great start, so now the oil will have cooled by lunchtime, which means I need to take it for a drive to warm it up and then try again! Not sure what I can do different though.

Any thoughts?

On a side note, the Oil filter isn't clearly visible from underneath, I think I can feel it in front of the sump and behind some sort of bar (cross member?) Our R211 had a much more easily accessible oil filter, I'm guessing this is the right place and I should just turn it by hand!? (I have a chain tool my step-dad gave me to wrap round it)

Any tips and advice would be awesome :(
