MG ZR 1.4 are they that bad ?

So i have around 600 pound to buy a new car i am stuck between a pug 206 1.4 lx 2001 with 110k on or a MG ZR 1.4 2004 with 71k on both the same price the pug has 11 owners the mg has 8 my mum has a mg the diesel version and has had it for 8 years with no problems not even a cam belt change. So there was me ringing the guy up who was selling the mg and told him ill pick it up tomorrow due to thinking rovers are god due to the 8 year thing. I have googled MG ZR 1.4 and all ive seen is head gasket problems.The guy im buying it off buys and sells cars for a living and has it since june.I have been told by friend that the only problem is the head gaskets but if u let the car warm up before putting your foot down its all good.

Are these cars that bad ?? What should i check for tomorrow before i buy ? oil and water for signs of head problems ? overheating ?Maybe check the service history if it has any to see what these 8 owners have done ? It has just passed a mot with "nothing wrong"
