MoT Emissions Failure '97 MGF

Well my bargain MG went in for a maiden test after fixing some of her more obvious faults.

Only failure was on Emissions. I assumed that might happen and had picked up a new Cat (car still had the original on). I asked the garage that if the emissions were high to fit the new Cat (save me the job of trying to get the lumps of iron/nuts off).

CO Fast Idle 1.113 & 1.609

Paticulates 901 & 855

Lamda Sensor 0.92 & 0.91

The technician has said there is no point fitting the new cat as he thinks its the head gsaket...

Now i did a full compression check when i first picked the car up up and all was fine. Is he just trying to get out of fitting the new cat by rolling out the stock head gasket excuse?

Answers on a postcard.
