Why do people do this?????

Just had a look at the head of the Rover 56 1.6L that had a quite serious misfire and ran very roughly at low revs. Compression test showed little compression on #2&3. We thought that the recently fitted cam belt must have been done incorrectly and damaged the valves but no!!!

With the head off it reveals a newly machined/skimmed head and MLS gasket and what look like fairly new valves however the valves are not seating properly hence the loss of compression but they don't look bent. Once the are out Bredan will be able to check for straightness of the stems and heads............................................. ... but who ever fitted this MLS wants hanging. Not one of the liners is of the right height for it to seal properly. The only solution is to use the Polymer beaded gasket as they are not sunk but almost flush with the block face.

It would appear that who ever fitted this head gasket assumed that having the head machined/skimmed would fix everything ...................................... anyway perhaps it's not as bad as we first thought.

We now await the report of the valves condition.
