Clutch pedal touching underside dash!

Hi All,while driving home yesterday,my 1997 VVC done something odd.As I went to change gear the pedal had ''disappeared''.It was so far in the air that its practically touching the dash.I've had the opposite before due to low fluid but what's happening here.? Is there a return spring on the pedal? Thanks in advance.



Actually is there more than one spring,Ive looked for a cause but I just can't suss it out.
