Battery Light Stayed On Once

Rover 45 1.8 petrol. New alternator.

Car fine for 5 days then noticed my battery light was on whilst driving home from work.

Wet, dark and cold, so carried on for 30 mins, 17 miles to home.

Strangely everything continued to work as normal, as if the light wasn't on.

Turned off and back on at home and it started fine and the light went out!

Been no problem for the last 4 days.

Does anyone have any ideas what might have caused this please?

Is it a common problem and could it happen again?

I can't quite trust the car at the moment!
