Peugeot 206 ~ My younger son's project car with problems.

That pesky rubber cover seal on the lower suspension Ball Joint was an MoT fail on the recent test. Relatively easy to slip the Ball Joint from the Hub to renew the damaged ball joint rubber seal cover. Trying to get it back in afterwards had me really struggling and failed miserably.

Had a break for a cuppa and it dawned on me. Working single handed I'll never be strong enough to get the ball joint back into it's pinch bolt location on the hub. Those powerful suspension springs need to be compressed. So although I had not used them for close on ten years, soon found my spring compressors.

After about what seemed like fifteen minutes of much tiring arm muscle work in the awkward and restricted confines of the wheel arch, not easy to swing the socket wrench to compress those big suspension springs in that limited space, I then lifted the Strut Assembly over the ball joint and it slipped in very easily. What a relief. Mind you, I had used some coarse wet and dry on the corroded areas of the ball joint and its pinch bolt location followed up with a smear of LM Grease on the bare metal interfaces. That helped. Sixteen years of exposure to all the road filth and muck caused quite a bit of corrosion on the 206's joint and location interfaces. That from past experience working on similar structures on Montegos and Maestros, makes refitting difficult and sometimes impossible unless that corrosion is thoroughly cleaned up.

See images attached. Those spring compressors really did speed things up.

Anyway, rubber seal all nicely in place and now two minor jobs to get car ready for MoT free retest.

Oh yes, what socket of other gismo is required to undo the filler and drain plugs on the 1.4 206 Gearbox? I thought it was a 3/8" square socket drive but it's a tad smaller than 3/8ths and too large for 1/4".
