Running out of Petrol... and getting your car running again.
Ok, so I managed to run out of petrol in my 45. I knew it was low and went out this morning to go and fill it up, but after spluttering a few times it stopped completely. (it was parked on a slope, nose down, which might not have helped fuel delivery)
Anyway, having worked out what I'd done I went out to get a fuel container and some petrol. Car duly filled and attempted to restart, no luck. turns over fine but did not spring to life. Thinking I'd managed to fill the fuel filter with muck from the bottom of the tank I got a new fuel filter and fitted that.
Turned the car over, still no start :-(
Then I had a look on this forum. Turns out I'm far from the first to be dumb enough to run out of petrol.
Following the advice from here I put another 10 litres of petrol into the car (15 litres total) And tried to start the car again.
After a little while of cranking to draw the fuel though.. it sprang back to life :-)
What I've learned.
1) when the fuel warning light comes on all the time, put some fuel in your car.
2) If the car will turn over, the immobiliser is being turned off correctly (so don't go chasing round after your spare keys)
3) Changing the fuel filter on a petrol rover 45 really is a 5 minute job, just be ready to catch the dribble of fuel that comes out when you undo the bottom fitting. Working on the idea that running out of fuel will draw sediment though from the tank this is probably worth doing as a matter of course in this situation.
4) If you do manage to run your car out of fuel, you need approx 15 litres of fuel back in the car before it will start again.
