Is it worth it?
Hi all. Have lurked around on these forums for a while but would appreciate your advice.
In the last 20 years I have only owned 3 cars:
Honda Accord (85) great car. Was the father-in-laws from new. No problems ever until I had to scrap it in 2005 due to a big rust hole near the fuel tank (mileage 141K).
Ford Escort mk IV (94) from 2005-10. Just don't ask! Gave me tons of grief!!
Rover 416SLi (95) from 2010 to present. No trouble at all. Here lies my quandry:
My sister had the Rover from 2001 so I know the history. I know the Honda engine will run and run (131K so far) but the bodywork paintwise is a little shoddy now. There are a few dents down the drivers side that can be knocked out. The drivers door one is too big so have another door for that. Also rust along the top of the windscreen. I replaced the suspension and other bits to keep it going every year. Only failed the MOT due to the exhaust backbox giving up. No holes anywhere underneath.
I have a quote (£2K) to re-weld the wheel arch and the windscreen, replace the door, knock out the dents and re-spray it. Am I liable to get at least another 5 years out of it if I spend the money? (unless someone hits me!)
I feel the engine will keep going and it still has some "oomph". It's never let me or my sister down and I wouldn't be happy to just get another car and have that constantly let me down.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks
