MG ZT+ dashboard lights

Need help, my dashboard lights on my 2003 MG ZT+ don't come on when I turn my headlights on but may come on occasionally after a little while. If I was to flick up the rear near side window button on the drivers door I can make the lights flash.. Any ideas ?
