45 squeaky front suspension

My first Rover, it's been a fortnight, just getting used to its little peculiarities and sorting out the normal from the expensive.

Picked up the car on the Thursday with a new MOT. Smooth quiet and lovely on the test drive and going home. Friday, the squeak started. It was a rattly rubbery squeak with a stiff point in the steering - no clatter, no bang, nothing going over bumps - just this increasingly awful noise on slow turning and stopping.

Took her to my tyre place to get the locking wheel nuts removed and we put her up on the ramp. All sound, he said all he could suggest was maybe top ball joint.

Since then I've pottered around town, done country lanes and 300 motorway miles, and the noise has gradually eased!

Is it possible the rubbers are just stiff from standing for a while? It may have been quite a while as the car was reduced from 995 to 495, I know they wanted stock shifting as they were moving premises and this was a trade-in. I spoke to the previous owner who reported no problems other than the cat D write-off having been before she had it (at least 4 years ago). Any other thoughts on such a squeak? There is still a very slight notch in the steering but neither MOT nor my tyre man found anything amiss with the steering and the noise comes from around the top of the wheel or even suspension mount in the engine bay.
