Gearbox?

I'm currently noticing two problems on my 2002 1.4 25, which I think may be linked. Firstly, when decelerating there is a loud 'whining' (without meaning to sound ridiculous, the car sounds pretty depressed), which is particularly evident at lower speeds (changing down; almost like the gear is too low for the speed, but it isn't!) and this is somewhat lessened when the clutch is depressed.



Furthermore, there is a really loud 'knocking' when driving in reverse. I'm no petrolhead, but I'm thinking this is gearbox related - could it be something simple like oil, or something more serious?
