pc hdmi to tv resolution

so I got this pc off freecycle so I could use it on the tv in the living room to play mp4 etc, and youtube stuff



duel core, 1gb graphics, with hdmi



I have set it up using win xp [thats all I have atm] and all is well, the graphics are radeon



basically whats happening, is that I am setting the resolution for the desktop to 1024x600 which displays what I need just right on a 42" screen, but if I switch pc off, start, or restart it reverts back to 800x600



it will be specifically the pc that is changing back, I doubt the tv can "tell" the pc what the res should be



any ideas?



a mate might be able to upgrade it to win7, will that be better? or will that fault still occur?
