Rover 75 1.8K doesn't start

Unfortunately I'm having some issues with my poor old Rover 1.8K, non turbo from 2002. I've had the engine blow, a cylinder liner and the engine block got cracked. It was all due to some poor head gasket work I guess.

I wasn't really ready to pay for a new engine block so I got a second hand engine block which seemed fine.

After some head gasket skim the engine was put back together but I also changed some valves and stuff.

All seems OK but the engine won't start now so I have a pretty serious problem.

My question is what can I do now, what do I need to test. I've heard that you need to check for spark, the service checked, fuel ( not sure if the fuel system if OK ) and compression. I do remember the folks at the service mentioning that they did find compression is not really what it should be.

What's the normal values for compression ?

I also have a pscan.eu scanner which I can use to see some real time values but I'm not sure what to look for. There are no error codes that indicate anything useful.

Thanks.
