Considering Buying An MG3 (Got A Fiesta ST2 Presently!!).

Thought about it when they were first launched then I drove a Ford Fiesta ST2 initially trying to diss the car but the more I looked at it, the brochure, drove one I just fell in love. Awesome driving fun, superb road holding, great sound in cabin (via a synthesiser lol), very good kit including Sony audio & superb Recaro seats as standard. However given the list price with all the options I added was 2 x MG3 Style's so it kind of should be better!!

When I first enquired about the ST2 it had only been out for about 4 to 5 Months & the general coconscious of opinion was that it could be the new XR kudos from the 80's & hold it's value very well. Problem is they are a victim of their own success in as much as they have sold so many there are many nearly new used ones coming up for sale - this is mainly due to the Ford Privilege Scheme (similar to what MG Rover did) where employees/family etc get extra discounts, good for them & Ford but does wonders (not) for residuals.

Reading comments on some forums folk sometimes say they go into a dealer when the car is around a year old & they can drive away a new one for no extra deposit & just a few extra £s a month. I thought may as well try then just get another. Alas I found this not to be, mine will be a year old on March 1st. List price for mine was £20,200 (I paid somewhat less) & dealers on average are offering £13,000 as PX. To me that's pretty awful & way worse than I expected.

Given this scenario I am a little put off as now the residual value on the PCP scheme has reduced by £1000 since last year too & in the back of my mind there must be an all new Fiesta not too far away, after all Corsa has just been done.

Problem is as much as it pains me to say it & I never for one minute thought I ever would I love my Fiesta, it's the striking Special Orange paint with the black & orange seats, the way it handles etc & the MG3 won't be a patch on it!

One of my neighbours said a while back if you decide to sell it give me first refusal. Obviously if I sell private I would be far better off. Should know in the next day or so re this.

I also take my cars to shows (MG Montego, ZR-Express Van) but won't take them out in the rain & so have missed a few shows because of this. I sold my Rover 25GSi just over a year ago which was used for wetter weather shows & I was thinking of buying another MG/Rover or Austin to cover. Then I thought well if I sell the ST for the right money perhaps an MG3 as I would then have another new car & an MG for not so good weather shows etc so kill two birds with one stone. This would also save the space for yet another vehicle (would make 6).

Problem is I'm not keen on the idea of a 1.5 engine producing a rather crap 105BHP & I just think it will feel cheap & cheerful after the ST.

I also said to myself that I wouldn't buy a new MG till the Chinese showed a bit more enthusiasm for the UK market & also till at least a Turbo version of the MG3 came out but waiting for MG to announce anything is slower that watching paint dry so Do I Bite The Bullet?

Thing is I like to personalise all new cars I buy but that's another issue as MG do sod all in the way of options and accessories.

If I do order one I think one of the two options here - A Style in Newton Black with the piano black facia & red inserts then paint the front & rear bumper diffusers in a contrasting colour likely Red. Then add one of the graffic designs, probably the one with the side decals as the side aspect is simply too deep.

Or in Silver with Gloss Black bumper inserts, black wheels (probably get 17" aftermarkets). Same interior bits.

I believe there is a company in Hampshire that does MG3/6 accessories because MG can't be bothered?

Thing is knowing my luck if I do then a few weeks later they will announce a Turbo which would make me furious.

Also to any MG 3 owners out there what is the audio like? I like decent quality sound,I'm guessing it is pretty naff so can it be changed at an audio specialist?

When I bought my Evoque I upgraded the factory audio the the 825W Meridian DSP Surround system but that was £1000 (one tenth of an MG3 lol).

Anyway given all the above & the bad residuals then I may as well get a new MG as at least I know that won't be good before I buy it.
