HGF :( First time fixing it myself. (Picture Heavy)

Hello all, my name is Daz

3rd time writing this post, i have the worst luck on forums :P

The last few weeks i have noticed my cars got a bit juddery when starting. I changed oil and filters and the problem seem to go away. Then i started the engine on christmas eve morning and the judder was back, much worse and my enginge would stick at 2000'ish rpm when revved. and it sounded like it was misfiring (i think, never actually had a car that has and i've noticed) my friend who was a mechanic passed by and had a quick look, upon looking in my coolant tank we noticed that the coolant tank which was at the full line 2 days previous was now empty, there was also k seal in the coolant tank, so my friend broke the news i had HGF.

I went to get a quote for parts, and decided since i was taking the engine apart, i'd do any bits i thought might need doing since i originally bought the car as a project car for something to do. My list so far includes

Head gasket kit and head bolts, been told the kit includes all the gaskets and stuff i'd need like rocker cover gasket ect.

water pump

cam belt

timing belt

thermostat

If there is anything else which would be worthwhile replacing while the engine is apart please let me know.

I started taking the engine apart today, my plan is to slowly do the job over the next few weeks, since i want to clean, polish / paint any parts i can. Any advice on what people have done / used to do this in the past would be helpful.

Here we go, and yes, i did put the red air filter on. Sounded much nicer and car was alot smoother lol

I then removed these 2 pipes, i know the 1 one the left is the engine breather, but not sure what the one on the right is. Anyone?

I then removed the coil packs and leads, are the leads HT leads? Don't know the proper name for them, only know HT leads from my dads old car, had to change the ones on his and they went to the spark plugs, but that was a good while ago and a different car.

Removed this, i think its some kind of sensor but curious as to what it actually is, must have looked over this when i read the guides

Took out all bolts attaching the cam cover to the engine, took them out in the right order thanks to following a guide that i found on here. I shall edit this thread later and add the link and thank the member who originally posted it

NOW prepare to be shocked, i was.

It seems this gasket had failed. majorly. after taking it off i realized that the side facing the cams had been peeling off and falling into the engine. No wonder it started sounding so rough the last few weeks! Very curious to know what can cause this.

And here you can actually see that it has been falling into the engine. no doubt i will find plenty more after taking the next section off!

And thanks the end of day 1, was getting too dark and cold lol.

I do have a few questions, any answer would be a great help!

1. I'm planning on taking a few weeks to do this job, including cleaning and painting engine parts. Are the engine parts still attached to the car going to be ok or should i wrap them in cloths/plastic wraps ect. Last think i want is for the engine to rust from the inside out!

2. What engine parts are NOT safe to paint? i have a dream of next year taking my custom modified rover 25 to shows with my friends who already go to shows, so the engine bay has to look as nice as i'm going to make the outside look. What parts should and should NOT be painted?

3. What special tools shall i need to finish the rest of the job? I have already ordered my torx sockets for the head bolts, will be ordering a cam locking tool for when i do the cam belt and torque wrenches will be ordered next week to ensure assembly of parts is done to correct torque.

4. Is there anything else worth doing while i have the engine apart? I have no problem stripping the entire thing if i need do, as long as i can find the guides or can find guidance lol. you dont learn unless you try!

Thanks all, i shall be editting this thread as i do more. Will also put up refrence threads i used while doing the project and give thanks to the members who wrote the guides and have helped me.

Again thanks all, hope i can give something back, this forums already helped me get rid of a few small problems i had when i bought the Rover a few months ago :)

Regards, Daz
