notchy gear change - clutch on its way out ?

Well the good news is that i have driven the car about 400 miles in the last week. Everything seemed ok but, my brother drove it the weekend and had problems getting in gear. It made me notice it was a bit notchy sometimes. Then last night when i got home i thought i could smell a bit of burnt clutch smell when i opened the boot. How hard is it to change the clutch and has anyone got any recomendations.
