75 v6 nasty noise

I guess I'm lucky, I have an 04 Rover 75 V6 limo. It was left out on my drive from Jan 1 till last week. I love the car but was tempted into a 2 yr lease of a Nissan Leaf. That was going to be my wife's car but she's reluctant to drive it for some reason. I was going to get rid of the Rover using the on-line auction and only reckoned to get 300 for it as it has a couple of bodywork issues and has done 129,000 miles.

So last week I changed my mind and want to keep it and use it for my daughter's wedding. Was going to spend 500 on the bodywork and sort out the handbrake. Replaced the battery and it burst into life. let it warm up and was going to take it for a 5 mile run but never got out of my road. A most horrendous metal on metal grinding noise was coming from the front offside wheel. I reversed a bit and tapped the brakes and noise went away. Back in forward drive and the noise came back. It didn't ease off at all and so I gave up and parked it back on the drive. Just wondered if this was likely to be the brakes, which I would tackle myself or something much worse which would mean it gets scrapped.
