Air intake

What air intake systems are there , I am not looking for good sounding one or one that looks good . I have read a little about heat soak . The car come with a big loud silver eBay special , looking for advice please I am looking for performance , do I just get a standard air box with uprated air cleaner or go for cool intake ? Does the intake length matter ?
