failed emissions hard to start my rover 25

New here but used your site and advice for the past 3 years



I have a rover 25 1.4 k-series (I assume) y reg 2001 I think and for the past year it's been hard to start, it will turn over fine it will fire up then conk out it will do it over and over with the only way of getting it to run is foot to the floor and start it keeping it at high revs for a few seconds until the Rev's that sound sluggish clears then it will run and drive fine, It will do it hot or cold every start up.



last year it flew through its mot but this year it failed on all the emissions and this starting problem only started month or two after last year's mot so my guess is that the starting problem and emissions is somehow connected?



Anyone have this problem or fixed it? Any help would be much appreciated.



now I've changed the spark plugs and temp sensor on the thermostat housing and removed air filter pipe to cancel out a breathing problem to no avail, I have recently noticed though when it fires and cuts out there's a bubbling/baby suckin an empty bottle noise coming from the inlet manifold if that's any indicator of anything or normal
