mgf clutch slave cylinder

hi

I am rebuilding the clutch slave cylinder from a mgf 1.8vcc

there is a small rubber washer that sits behind the spring

one side of the washer is flat the other side is "split"

which side of this washer should face the spring ? flat or split side ?
