Lumpy tickover

The car is wonderful in every respect except that the tick-over is "lumpy", as in noticeably arrhythmic, though not uncomfortable. I read somewhere, and can't now find the article, that this could be caused by a faulty sensor. I've tried the additive route, but it makes no difference. It's on a 59 plate and has done 23,000 miles. Has anyone got any more info on this?
