Battery light flashing!

Just replaced cambelt and bits after near catastrophe with crank pully dropping off.

Everything back together, but when starting the engine, the battery light goes off for a few seconds, then starts flashing!

This is a very repetitive flashing, and does not seem random, such as a slipping belt would cause. It seems a "controlled" flashing!

Car started fine, but after a short spin the battery was dead and would not start car.

battery is now on charge and will see if this resolves the problem.

It is likely the battery was low on charge, but has anyone experience of this flashing battery light?
