'96 MGF Alternator not working
'96 MGF Alternator not working
I am having some trouble getting my '96 MGF back on the road after a HGF repair.
The problem strangely is not with the engine (the garage managed to fix that OK), but with the alternator.
The original one had a cracked casing so we decided to replace it instead of waiting for it to disintegrate on the Autobahn.
The engine/gear subframe was removed for the HG replacement.
But now the fun started:
The replacement alternator from Rimmer Bros: DOA (?) No generator light when switching ignition on, no battery charge.
A refurbished part from a German company came with the wrong (past '01) connectors but was made to work, well for a day or so, then while driving I got this sequence:
Generator light on for 30 sec, then off, then after some time ABS light on, then power steering light on with steering getting stiff (not bad BTW, who needs power steering for such a small car?) and then (after an additonal 30 km) engine stuttering and I organized a pick-up.... Battery voltage was down to below 9V.
Ignition on with engine off: No generator light, hence most likly no ground path (again).
I checked all ground connections I could find. The one in the engine bay looked good. The one for the battery under the front bonnet, too.
Any ideas where else I could check? The car currently is at the garage where they agreed to fix their repair, but any hints might ease their work and reduce my costs...
Any comments appreciated,
regards,
Stefan
