Newbie whats the crack?
Hi, Just got a 1.4 MG ZR 2003 with only 37k miles and loads of service receipts. It all seems great but obviously im concerned about the HGF on this model K series. I was thinking about changing the head gasket, then looked at doing the land rover gasket and new bolts and oil rail. THEN found a big write up all about studies into the HGF with lots of ideas on to why it fails. Looking at some of the info there would suggest my year and model is in the low range of having a issue however it also states that there are so many factors to the failure changing a gasket etc will give guarantee reliability. A few have even seen well over 100k miles with the factory gasket so what to do? One bit mentioned the thermal shock to the cooling system when the thermostat opens - I am wondering is it worth drilling a hole in the thermostat or removing it?
Basically looking for advice on what do to? the car was fairly cheap so dont want to spend a fortune for no more reliability - like wise will i just run it as is and keep a close eye on oil and water? I use the car every day and do a couple of long 2-300 mile journeys twice a month so I could really do with having a car I can trust. Any info or peoples thought would be great thanks - new to the MG world but it was to good a deal to pass up and it is fun to drive. Thanks.
