Will it hurt to unplug my MAF to test?

Just wondered if it is safe to unplug the MAF. Have read posts on different forums etc of people unplugging the sensor, to check the cars performance without. Therefore helping to determine if the MAF is shot. Without paying around £200 only to find my problem still not fixed.

There is also the option to spray on some cleaner too?
