Annoying Squeak from Front End - Solved!!
I had a lot of work done on my car last autumn for the MOT including TREs, discs/pads, and front ball joint. Work was done by a very good old world mechanic who believes in fixing things not just replacing parts! My car is looked after for me by my son (i.e. he drives 90% of the time and I pay the bills 100% of the time )
Anyway following this work and a successful MOT, my son could hear a funny squeak coming from the front end; this was not permanent and appeared to be random i.e. not caused by braking, accelerating, cornering .... He dropped the car off at the mechanic who could not identify any problem, but he lubricated the front end bushes just in case (exactly which ones I am not sure). The squeak disappeared for a long time and a couple of months ago started again; I asked my son to drop the car at an MOT testing station near his work and see if they could identify any problem with the front end (they are usually pretty good with pry-bar etc!!). They couldn't find any problem either and when my son went to pick the car up there were three mechanics poking about underneath and scratching their heads. One of these guys suggested it may be something under the bonnet, for example the spare wheel? Nobody took much notice of him ............ Anyway they didn't charge for their time as they didn't find anything
I was in England on holiday a couple of weeks ago and decided to check the spare wheel and anything else under the bonnet: and lo and behold, I found the bolt that holds the spare wheel in place had separated from the plastic knob!! I could also see some marks on the inner "wall" of the wheel well where the rubber of the tyre had been rubbing due to movement. I managed to affect a temporary repair, and drove off down to Cornwall and back with no squeaking. My son has also been driving the car (everyday use to work and back) for a couple of weeks now and no squeaking. I have ordered, and my son has fitted a new retaining bolt.
Now the purpose of my message: if you get a funny squeaking from the front of the car, which you can't identify, check the spare wheel is bolted down tight.
