SCU/BCU question

So I think my SCU has gone kaput. Fob is no longer functioning 95% of the time but it can sometimes operate.

The car is currently armed so will obviously not allow reprogramming of anything currently.

Wondering if a 1.4 ZR SCU will be hot swappable if I get the fobs from that too. They are both pektron.

I am under the impression there is no link to the ECU at all beyond the basic "turn on/off" command on the immobiliser.

Is this correct? Some people have sown the seeds of doubt with anecdotal evidence, but I don't know how competent they were in installation.

Would like some advice from people with actual experience, not just what they've read on some random article somewhere unless it's well sourced. People like Paul from Technizen would no doubt have the answer but I have no clue as to how often he pops in, thanks.
